Welcome to Lake Austin, where the water stays cool year-round and the fishing stays hot. I'm your local guide, and I've been working these waters for years, learning every drop-off, structure, and seasonal pattern that makes this lake a bass angler's dream. This isn't your typical corporate fishing trip – it's a personal day on the water with someone who genuinely loves showing folks the best spots Lake Austin has to offer. We'll hit my go-to honey holes, and I'll share the techniques that consistently produce fish in these Texas waters. Whether you're new to fishing or you've been casting lines for decades, I'll tailor the day to match your experience level and help you land some quality fish.
Lake Austin stretches 22 miles through the heart of Texas hill country, and every mile holds fishing opportunities. We'll spend our day targeting the lake's famous structure – submerged trees, rocky points, and creek channels that hold bass throughout the year. The lake's clear water means we can sight-fish during spawn season, while the deeper sections provide consistent action when fish move offshore. I provide all the gear you'll need, from quality rods and reels to a tackle box stocked with proven lures for Lake Austin conditions. We'll cover water efficiently in my boat, but don't worry about the technical stuff – I handle all the navigation and fish-finding while you focus on the fun part. The trip accommodates up to two anglers, which means personalized attention and plenty of opportunities for both guests to get hands-on coaching. If hunger strikes during our day, we can pull up to one of the lakeside restaurants for lunch and cold drinks – there's something special about sharing fish stories while looking out over the water we just worked.
Lake Austin fishing requires adapting to the conditions, and that's where local knowledge pays off. During spring months, we'll focus on sight-fishing techniques around shallow spawning areas, using finesse baits like soft plastics and small jigs to target bedding bass. Summer fishing shifts to deeper structure, where we'll employ Carolina rigs and deep-diving crankbaits to reach fish holding in 15-25 feet of water. The lake's rocky composition makes it perfect for working jigs and Texas-rigged worms along bluff walls and points. I keep multiple rod setups ready so we can quickly switch techniques based on what the fish are telling us. You'll learn to read the electronics, understand how weather affects fish behavior, and pick up some local tricks that work specifically in these Texas waters. Don't worry if you've never used some of these techniques – I'll guide you through each step, from proper lure presentation to setting the hook when you feel that telltale thump.
"An Unforgettable Fishing Experience with Bass Tours ATX! Our trip with Bass Tours ATX was nothing short of amazing, thanks to our incredible guide, Wyatt Rae. Despite the windy conditions and less-than-ideal weather, Wyatt's deep knowledge of the lake and undeniable passion for fishing made all the difference. One of the most memorable moments of the trip was watching Wyatt patiently coach my son through the process of out-fishing a big female bass guarding her bed. For 15 minutes, Wyatt guided him step by step, demonstrating his dedication and expertise. The result? An absolutely stunning 8.77lb bass! It was a day we will never forget, and we can't thank Wyatt enough for making it so special. If you're looking for a top-tier fishing guide who truly cares about the experience, look no further than Bass Tours ATX! Highly recommend." - Morgan
Largemouth Bass rule Lake Austin, and for good reason – this lake produces some genuine hawgs. These fish thrive in the lake's diverse habitat, from shallow coves to deep main-lake structure. Spring brings the spawn, when big females move shallow to build beds, offering sight-fishing opportunities that get your heart pumping. During this time, bass become aggressive defenders of their territory, making for exciting battles on light tackle. Summer and fall find them schooled up on main-lake points and humps, where they ambush shad in spectacular surface feeds. The best part about Lake Austin largemouth? They fight hard in the clear water, making long runs and aerial displays that test your drag and skills. These bass average 2-4 pounds, but don't be surprised when a 6-8 pounder grabs your lure and reminds you why Texas bass fishing has such a reputation.
White Bass bring non-stop action to Lake Austin, especially during their spring spawning runs up the Colorado River. These schooling fish create some of the most exciting fishing you'll find anywhere, with surface feeds that can last for hours. When white bass are active, you'll catch fish on nearly every cast, making them perfect for anglers who love constant action. They typically run 1-2 pounds, but what they lack in size they make up for in numbers and fight. The key to white bass success is finding the schools, and that's where my local knowledge shines – I know the seasonal patterns and can put you on fish when they're biting. Fall months bring some of the best white bass action as they chase shad in the main lake, creating topwater opportunities that will have you reaching for the camera.
Crappie in Lake Austin offer a different kind of challenge, requiring finesse and patience to consistently catch quality fish. These slab-sided fighters relate to structure year-round, holding around submerged trees, boat docks, and creek channels. Spring brings them shallow for spawning, when you can sight-fish for them in clear water using small jigs and live minnows. Lake Austin crappie run larger than average, with 12-14 inch fish common and true slabs pushing 15+ inches showing up regularly. They're excellent table fare, making them a favorite target for families looking to take home a fish dinner. The bite can be subtle, so I'll

Both black and white crappie call Lake Austin home, usually measuring 7-12 inches and weighing around a pound. These schooling fish love hanging around brush piles, fallen timber, and creek channels in 10-20 feet of water. Spring spawning season is your best bet when water hits 62-68°F and they move shallow. What guests love about crappie fishing is how cooperative they can be - find a school and you'll often catch several. Plus, they're hands down some of the best eating fish in the lake with sweet, flaky white meat. They're most active at dawn and dusk. Pro tip: use a small jig under a slip bobber around standing timber. Once you locate a school, mark the spot - they'll likely be there again.

These olive-green fighters are Lake Austin's most popular gamefish, typically running 12-24 inches and 1-4 pounds. You'll find them around submerged structure, fallen trees, and weed lines, especially in shallow coves during spring and fall. They're ambush predators with that famous oversized mouth - when it opens, the upper jaw extends past their eyes. What makes them special is the fight they put up when hooked, plus they're excellent eating when caught from clean water. Spring is prime time when they move shallow to spawn. Here's a local trick: look for bass feeding on shad near the dam early morning - throw a white spinnerbait and work it slow through the schools.

Also called sand bass, these silver-sided schoolers average 10-12 inches but can reach 18 inches on Lake Austin. They're aggressive feeders that travel in large schools, often pushing baitfish to the surface in open water. Spring and early summer are peak times when they run up feeder creeks to spawn. What makes them exciting is their scrappy fight and willingness to hit lures - they're not picky eaters. They're also fantastic on the table with firm, white meat. Look for feeding schools by watching for diving birds or surface action in deeper areas. Local tip: when you find a school feeding on top, cast small white jigs or spoons right into the commotion and retrieve fast.
